This is the inspiring journey of Sumithra, a homemaker who stepped outside her comfort zone — and discovered her own strength.

Sumithra had spent years managing her home, unaware of the world beyond her kitchen walls. When she heard about Vihaan NGO, where RuralShores Skills Academy provides free skills training to vulnerable and underprivileged women, something stirred inside her — a desire to build her own identity, support her family financially, and prove to herself that she could do more.
But like many women, her first battle was at home.

“When I told my family about the training, my husband resisted. He asked, ‘Who will do the household chores?’ I promised him that I would manage everything at home before 10:00 AM — and then attend the classes.”
Determined, Sumithra joined the training. But fear didn’t leave her side.
“I was nervous. I didn’t know English, I was scared to speak, scared I wouldn’t understand anything. What if the teacher asked me something? What if they gave me a laptop? I had never touched one. I was shivering.”
Yet, she showed up. Every single day.

Thanks to the patient and encouraging teaching methods of her trainer, Ms. Divyashree, Sumithra began her transformation — one small step at a time. She learned new words through stories and repetition. She slowly started speaking in English instead of Kannada. She developed self-confidence, time management, and communication skills. She even bargained confidently with shopkeepers — something she had never dared to do.
“Earlier, my whole day would go into finishing housework. Now, I plan, prioritize, and even keep Sundays for what can be done in advance. I never thought I’d one day present confidently in front of a class. But here I am.”
Today, Sumithra and her batchmates are applying for jobs. They’ve learned how to attend interviews — both online and offline. They’ve discovered the power of self-belief, digital skills, and professional communication.
Most importantly, they’ve found their voice.
“We’re so happy when any job opportunity comes our way. We’re ready now — ready to grab it and move forward in life.”
Sumithra’s story is not just about learning — it’s about reclaiming confidence, dignity, and independence.
A big shoutout to Vihaan NGO and RuralShores Skills Academy for lighting this spark. Let’s celebrate and support more journeys like hers!
