“Ma’am they can’t use computers. They’ve never even touched a keyboard. There’s no way they can create a resume in 2 days!”
That’s what I was told during our first trial project—a resume creation challenge at the start of the program.
Two months later, the same students were confidently editing videos, making reels, and navigating digital tools like pros.
Oh, and yes! They created those resumes within two days.
So, what changed?
We tapped into something most people overlook: the heterogeneity of our students.
No classroom is truly homogenous. Each student walks in with unique experiences and strengths:
⟶Some organize thoughts well
⟶Some communicate confidently
⟶Some excel at technology
⟶Some bring energy and vision
The magic happens when they share a common goal—getting a job, becoming digitally savvy, or speaking fluent English. Collaboration follows naturally.
One student had a knack for structure; organizing notes, arriving early, supporting quietly.
Another was fluent in English, helping peers speak without fear.
And our facilitator recognized and praised their strengths.
That praise wasn’t just feel-good; it was directional. It built ownership and confidence, helping them step up and lead in unfamiliar areas.
This is how leadership is born. Not through titles, but through collaboration, trust, and recognition.
At RuralShores Skills Academy, we see this daily. Leadership doesn’t look the same for everyone— and that’s why everyone can be a leader.
