We spoke with Sundus, a dedicated and experienced trainer working with one of the client programs facilitated by RuralShores Skills Academy.
1. Tell us about your journey.
I’m Sundus Zehra. After completing my (MSW) Master of Social Work and interning at AIIMS, I pursued a fellowship in eye care management. But my passion has always been creating meaningful change. Joining RuralShores Skills Academy gave me the chance to make a real difference, especially for girls often left behind.
2. What does a day in your life look like as a RuralShores Skills Academy trainer for vulnerable girls training?
Every day is full of positivity and learning; for my students and for me. It’s a journey of growth, shared daily.
3. A powerful classroom moment?
At one of the centres, the students were nervous before their first interview. I ran mock sessions and told them, “If you feel scared, just look at me.” And they did. A simple smile from me gave them the courage to speak. That trust they placed in me—was unforgettable. Even better? 90% got placed. It felt like my own success.
4. How do you build learner confidence?
By creating a safe, judgment-free space. I break tasks into small steps, celebrate every win, and stay beside them through the tough parts. Slowly, they begin to believe in themselves.
5. The biggest shift from Day 1 to Graduation?
Confidence. They enter unsure and quiet—by the end, they stand tall, speak clearly, and believe in their future.
6. How do you engage nervous or shy youth?
Through interactive sessions filled with stories, games, and role plays. I start with comfort-building activities. Ruby, one of my students, once felt inferior due to financial struggles—but with steady support, she gained confidence and landed a job. That growth was inspiring.
7. Role of technology in your sessions?
Technology brings the world closer. Videos, virtual interviews, and online tools make learning richer and more real—especially for rural learners.
8. Your one message to trainees?
Believe in yourself—even if no one else does. That belief is the first step.
9. One skill every youth must build?
Courages and Confident communication. It opens every door, in every industry.
BONUS: What does ‘impact’ mean to you?
Impact is helping someone grow; personally, and professionally. It’s watching a girl find her voice or seeing students step into jobs with pride. Being named Rising Star of the Year for my personality and professionalism reminded me I’m on the right path and inspires me to keep going.
